If you're looking to save money on gas, we'd recommend looking elsewhere. The Shell Drive for Five gas rewards credit card offers just doesn't have the octane required to justify being your wallet's daily driver. Let's take a look at why.
On it's surface, the card may not sound terrible. Earn 5 cents cash back for every gallon of gas that you purchase at a shell station, with no annual fee. Today's average gallon of gas price is right around $2.50. This means that you're earning right around 2% cash back for every dollar you spend. Again, this isn't the worst earning rate out there for a cash back credit card. Unfortunately, the benefits really stop there. The card has a 26.24% APR as of 3/10/18, which is a solid 10% points higher than a typical rewards card. You also won't earn any cash back on your non-shell purchases. This means that the card is really a one trick pony. But wait, it gets worse. Shell has a fuel rewards program that already lets you earn 5 cents back per gallon without holding their credit card.
So what's your best move? If you have fair credit, we'd recommend looking at Blispay. Blispay offers 2% cash back on all purchases, everyday. Cash back earned is automatically applied to your account balance as a statement credit each month. If your credit score is a bit stronger (680+) take a look at either the Bank of America Cash Rewards Card, or the PNC Cash card. Both of these cards offer increased earning rates on fuel purchases, as well as cash back on your everyday purchases.
The best part is that you can use Shell's fuel rewards program in addition to your cash back credit card. That means that if you use Blispay in conjunction with the fuel rewards program, you'll earn 4% back on gas purchases (2% from Blispay, plus 2% from Shell). The other benefit for this strategy is that you aren't tied to exclusively using Shell. It's not uncommon for gas stations to vary by 5-10 cents a gallon. Shell might not always be your best choice. Having a general use cash back card will serve you better in the long run.
